Why VELUX putting vacuum glass in a roof window matters more than it looks

Most vacuum-glazing news is about heritage sash windows — slim units dropped into Georgian frames so a listed building can keep its character and lose its draughts. So it would be easy to file VELUX's Heritage roof window, now reaching the UK and Ireland, under "another niche product." We think that undersells it. When a manufacturer as mainstream as VELUX builds a whole product line around vacuum insulated glazing, two things are worth paying attention to: where they've used it, and who they are.

Roof windows are where a vacuum earns its keep

Here is a detail that rarely makes the marketing copy. A conventional sealed double-glazed unit is filled with a low-conductivity gas — usually argon — and part of how it insulates depends on that gas staying still. Tilt the unit toward horizontal, as you do in a roof, and the gas inside the cavity can start to circulate: warm gas rises on the inner pane, sinks on the cold outer one, and quietly ferries heat across the gap. The effect is small, but it means a gas-filled unit’s real-world U-value can drift as the angle changes.

A vacuum unit has no gas to circulate. Remove the gas and you remove convection entirely, at any angle. That is precisely why a roof window — sloped, exposed, and one of the coldest surfaces in most homes — is such a natural home for the technology. VELUX quotes a whole-window Uw of 1.0 W/m²K for the Heritage window, dropping to 0.83 in a hybrid build that pairs the vacuum pane with a conventional cavity, plus around 38 dB of acoustic reduction. Those are strong numbers for a rooflight, and the vacuum is a big part of why they hold up where the glass meets the sky.

The bigger signal is who is doing it

Vacuum glazing has spent twenty-five years as a specialist product: invented at the University of Sydney, first commercialised by Nippon Sheet Glass as Pilkington Spacia in 1997, and mostly sold through heritage-glazing specialists ever since. The technology works — that was never really in doubt — but it has stayed on the edges of the market.

VELUX is not on the edges of anything. It is one of the most recognised names in the industry, and it developed this glass with Guardian Glass, a major float-glass manufacturer. When companies of that size commit to tempered vacuum glazing for a mainstream line, it does more than add one product to the shelf. It pulls the technology toward volume manufacturing, wider installer familiarity, and the kind of supply chain that eventually brings prices down. That is the transition vacuum glazing has been waiting for, and it is worth more than any single spec on a datasheet.

Our take — and the caveats

We would not oversell it. A Uw of 1.0 is good, not record-breaking; roof windows carry inherent frame and installation losses that a flat, wall-mounted unit avoids, and the very best flat vacuum units on the market reach lower centre-of-glass figures. This is also one product line in one segment, not a wholesale reinvention of the window market. Availability, price and installer coverage in the UK will take time to settle.

But direction matters. For years the honest summary of vacuum glazing was “brilliant technology, tiny market.” A mainstream manufacturer choosing it — for exactly the application where its physics shines — is one of the clearer signs yet that the second half of that sentence is starting to change.
